Radio Interview & Podcast:

What did St Joseph say in Scripture?

  • We have no recorded words from St Joseph in Scripture.
  • Through the language of his actions, he spoke a great deal!

Practically, what does St Joseph teach fathers today?

  • He teaches us how to live our identities received in Baptism as Priest, Prophet, and King.

What does it mean to be a ‘Priest’ in our families?

  • The role of a priest is to bless and to make holy.
  • As a righteous Jew, St Joseph would have blessed Jesus at least weekly on Fridays.
  • We need to bless our children and our wives every day!
  • This can be as simple as saying, “I bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
  • God empowers a dad’s blessing to be effective and protective. It’s real.
  • Exorcists say that even Satan recognizes a father’s blessing. It’s invisible to the human eye, but visible spiritually and incredibly powerful.

What is the right way to think about our baptismal identity as “King” in our household?

  • Kings protect and lead.
  • Joseph protected his child from the ‘slaughter of the innocents.’
  • We need to protect our children from the slaughter of their innocence through pornography, immodesty, bad character, and harmful language.
  • Joseph led his family in humility.
  • In fact, he was least qualified to lead the family compared to Jesus and Mary, yet God worked through him as the head of his family.
  • Similarly, God blesses the leadership of a father, even if he feels unqualified.
  • The children and the wife are blessed through the authority of the father.
  • God is a God of order, and grace flows through the order He established.
  • Some think that Joseph was going to divorce Mary because he suspected Mary had been unfaithful. In contrast, there is strong evidence that Joseph was actually showing great humility, because he felt unworthy to marry Mary and be the father of Jesus. The angel’s words “Be not afraid to take Mary, your wife, into your home” point to his reverential fear of the sacredness of Mary and her divine child.

Can a dad really be a “Prophet”? How?

  • Prophets interpret the world from the perspective of God.
  • Prophets teach.
  • As dads, we need to teach our kids the Faith.
  • According to Pew Research, the most influential factor in children practicing the Faith is their father having conversations with them about faith at home.
  • “You shall diligently teach your children” (Deuteronomy 6:7), “whether you are busy or at rest”, is part of the great commandment!

What resources can help dad more easily lead his family in far more powerful and joyful ways?
