During our life can we continue to grow in our ability to understand, express, and manage our emotions?

  • Yes!

In our life, we will hear many of these same suggestions from well-intentioned
people about how to improve our emotional health.
Some of these suggestions are very good. The important lesson is that quite
a few of these suggestions are incomplete without the wisdom of our Catholic Faith.

Below are some of the suggestions for emotional health that need help:

  • Stop negative self-talk.
  • Believe there is a reason for everything.
  • Have confidence.
  • Like yourself.
  • See yourself through the eyes of someone who loves you.
  • See the big picture.

What can you add to the above suggestions from the perspective of our Catholic Faith to make them far more effective?

  • Stop negative self-talk… Yes, but more importantly, start speaking what is true about you: I am a child of God, good and lovable because God made me!3
  • Believe there is a reason for everything… Since God is all-wise and all-powerful, everything He does or allows is to help you get to Heaven. Everything.4
  • Have confidence… The root meaning of ‘Confidence’ is ‘with faith.’ So, real confidence is to approach life ‘with faith’ trusting that if you follow God, He will take care of everything. Everything.5
  • Like yourself… Sure, like yourself, because God loves you. However, don’t like whatever in you disobeys God. Instead, confess that and change.
  • See yourself through the eyes of someone who loves you… Yep! See yourself through God’s eyes. By far, His opinion matters the most.
  • See the big picture… Yes! The big picture is Heaven, what we need to do to get there, and how we can bring as many people with us as possible!
