In this scene from the Lord of the Rings, Frodo sets out on his own to take the ring to Mordor:
What happened to Samwise Gamgee when he entered the water?
He started to drown.
Frodo pulled him into the boat.
Why did Sam enter the water even though he couldn't swim?
He had made a promise to accompany Frodo all the way to Mordor.
He was going to keep his promise no matter what.
What aspects of God's loyalty to us do we see in Sam's actions?
God will never leave us, even if we try to leave Him.
God is willing to sacrifice His very life to protect us.
Through the Eucharist especially, God stays near us and literally gives us His life.
Deeper Bonus Question: At the end of the Lord of the Rings story, in what way is Sam Christ-like toward Frodo?
When Frodo can’t go on, Sam carries him up Mount Doom.
Just like Sam accompanied Frodo to Mordor to destroy the ring, Jesus accompanies us as we bear the consequences of sin. Christ directs us to where we can destroy our sins… in Baptism and Confession.
